Welcome Letter From Judy Spence

Hello and welcome to the website of the NAET Clinic of Ottawa and la Clinique de NAET de l'Outaouais. I would like to introduce myself and to share a few thoughts with you before you begin touring this website.
I am pleased to tell you that I am in my 11th year of serving the Ottawa-Outaouais region. I offer a holistic service to my patients. This makes sense from a clinical point of view. It was the approach that got me well after many years of my being completely debilitated. Like the children with Autism and the adults and children with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) who are exceptionally hypersensitive to the environment, so too was I. I had suffered a toxic environmental chemical overload coupled with viral and yeast infections. Months of acute chemical exposure during a DIY home renovation added to my total load which was compounded by other stressors. This overload caused the elasticity of my body's resilience to snap. The result was whole body metabolic dysfunction. I was bedridden and totally disabled, reacting to my house air, the environment and all foods, 24/7.
Fortunately, my extreme condition is not typical of most. Having personally experienced extreme allergies and sensitivities to so many triggers I fully understand the predicament of those who I call the "Walking Wounded'. The complete breakdown of my immune system left me with no resilience and no reserves. I developed acute defective neurologic, liver, brain, gut and kidney function. Metabolically, I was like many of the Autistic children who I see in my practice.
It took only a few short months for my body to completely crash. I became hypersensitive to virtually everything from foods, to chemicals, to inhalants and to my own self. I became intolerant of gluten, gliaden, casein and lactose. Once the elasticity of resilience snapped, it took me much work, determination, medical knowledge and, it took significant finances for me to be able to access the kinds of treatments that brought about my recovery. Recovery is possible. More than what I was taught in the many courses, trainings and readings that I have undertaken over the last 20 years, I am living proof that investing in treatment is worthwhile. My original medical background was in nursing. It has been made stronger, broader and deeper through post gradute studies and certifications that I have undertaken over the past two decades.
Many of the practitioners whom I have met at international symposia and courses and who are treating persons with MCS, CFS, FM, Porphyria, ADD, ADHD, Autism, PDD, Asperger's Syndrome and so forth are either affected themselves or, they have family members who are affected. I bring to my practice not only the best practices, most current theories, training and professional experience but I also bring passion, empathy and personal insight.
I was instrumental in creating NAET treatment protocols, such as the boosting technique. I have been an invited speaker at NAET annual symposium on the Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) protocol that I developed to support massage therapy that many allergy and FM patients need. I continually incorporate other practices and protocols (DAN!, ACAM, AAEM, NGH) into my NAET practice. NAET is not only very effective at treating allergies, it is exceptionally good for treating chronic diseases and infections as well as being a very useful tool in prevention.
With my Doctorate of Natural Medicine (DNM), Acupuncture (ON) and Naturopath (QC) licensing, I am able to provide individually tailored treatment programs to my patients that exceed standard NAET protocols. NAET practitioners without medical backgrounds must adhere to boilerplate NAET protocols because they lack deeper knowledge of medical diseases and processes. Patients seen elsewhere may have more treatments than they need or would receive in my practice. I assess allergy, sensitivty and meridian health using sophisticated Bio-Meridian computerized test equipment. If no allergy exists, I do not treat. Using my traditional medical and Natural Medicine education coupled with state-of-the-art MSAS-Pro computerized testing, I achieve significant outcomes with fewer treatments, on average.
PREVENTION
I have the greatest respect for those who come in to see me because they are being pro-active and want to prevent illness by embracing lifestyle choices that are aimed at enhancing their health. Had I done the same I would have never become as toxic as I had and I would have known what to do or whom to see to get help at the first sign that I was in trouble.
One evening In the summer of 1991 I was innocently having a dinner party, enjoying the company of friends. 5 hours later my body had completely crashed. My elastic resilience, which I felt was being overstretched (I had incessant pains and extreme headaches which my doctor had dismissed the few times I went in to see him about my pain) just snapped. From that moment on, I experienced pain, allergic-type reactions to foods, perfumes, cleaners, dusts, pets, pollens, paint, crumbs burning in the toaster or on the stove, to yeasts and moulds, to the toilet paper and toothpaste we take for granted as being normal to use and as being beneficial. I became allergic to myself, to the very bacteria and yeasts in and on my body, to the neurotransmitters I needed for sustaining life, to the chemicals stored in my body, to virtually everything. I became what is known as a Universal Reactor. Gaining and understanding of what happened to me took years. Finding solutions to my condition took many years.
ELASTICITY OF RESILIENCE AND THE BODY'S RESERVES
Once the elasticity of resilience breaks it takes a Herculean effort to return to a normal baseline or homeostasis. Ask any parent who has managed to pull their child back from the jaws of Autism a most cruel disease. Environmental Illness (MCS, CFS, FM, ADD, ADHD, porphyria and severe allergy) runs a parallell course to the whole body, whole systems metabolic turmoil of autism.
Maybe you can understand a little better now why I am delighted when the young, the middle aged and even the elderly come in to get assessed to establish a baseline of their current health with a view of maintaining and of improving it. Hats off to those who take their health and their future into their hands when they can effect meaningful improvements. I am especially proud of the young men who come in to get help as men stereo-typically are not quite as proactive. I admire the athletes and the extreme athletes who come in to see how they can improve themselves all the more. Many Olympic athletes see NAET practitioners the world over so that they can "improve on a good thing".
WHY I TRAINED IN DIFFERENT TREATMENT MODALITIES
A Holistic practice means not putting a square peg into a round hole. People are so unique. Even when we are dealing with simple issues there are still several variables that lead people to their state of health: environmental and nutritional exposures, infections, finances, a whole host of stressors, heredity, etc. Just as there is not one set treatment for cardiac patients or for diabetic patients because of the multiple variables, there is no one set treatment for most health issues. There are general considerations but which ones affect each person will differ and as a result, their treatment program will be developed to speak to their unique needs.
Autism, for example, is not a single entity with one set of triggers or predisposing factors. Nor does it look or behave the same in each person. One child may have allergies, another may have poor ability to handle ammonia from proteins, another may demonstrate opium-like effects from eating dairy or gluten and so on. One person may need metabolic issues corrected first and another may need allergies dealt with first.

COMMONALITIES
There are certain commonalities shared by the clients I see in my practice. Seeing the benefits of a multi-discliplinary approach, I trained in several modalities. I offer more of a 'one stop shopping'. For example, allergies can be triggered by emotional issues. NAET tests and treats for emotional links to allergens in cursory manner. I took that further and certified in hypnotism because hypnotism can help reduce pain, reduce the emotional triggering of reactions and it can help with illness states. Acupuncture helps with the reduction of pain and inflammation. It can be combined with NAET to treat allergies. It can be combined with hypnosis to synergistically enhance the effect of both of modalities. NAET synergistically enhances the outcomes of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). NAET, acupuncture and hypnosis can synergistically enhance the outcomes of the homotoxicology that I offer.
JACK OF ALL TRADES?
Just the relevant ones! I initially trained as a nurse some 30 years ago. Like doctors and like naturopaths, our basic training is rather diverse. We have competencies in many areas. It is this paradigm that I bring to my practice. Treat the patient as a whole, unique person. This is what I have spent the last 20 years developing the necessary competencies to deliver. Every modality that I offer ties in with the others I offer in my practice.
WHY ATTEND MY PRACTICE OVER THAT OF OTHERS?
Many other practitioners cannot offer a comprehensive approach because they do not have the diverse basic training to build upon. As a Quebec licensed Naturopath I have continuing education studies in Environmental Medicine; in Integrative and Complementary Medicine under author and medical lecturer, Dr. William Cowden; in NAET and in BioSET both in which I have advanced level II certification; in Acupuncture; in hypnosis where I have both NLP and National Guild of Hypnotists training in hypnosis as well as Age Regression certification and; since allergic people often have edema ('hold water') I provide hands on Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD).
My credentials and my memberships are found under the header Judith Spence on my website. The full range of services which I offer at my clinic are found listed under the headers Services. The fees I charge for my services are under the Fees header.
